National Intern Day: Celebrating McLane’s Summer Interns

July 25 marks National Intern Day and an opportunity to highlight McLane’s internship program. McLane’s internship program opens its doors to college students from across the country to gain real world experience working in several departments including human resources, sales, safety, special operations, and information technology.  McLane interns gain valuable insights into the inner workings of the company, working directly with teammates and attending customer meetings, planning sessions and site visits.

Here is what several interns have to say about their experience:

Avery Carrier, Human Resources Intern, Baylor University
Degree: Human Resources Management & Entrepreneurship
“Equally, Human Resources serves every teammate. Through recruiting teammates, developing training, and having an open door to help solve conflicts, Human Resources is a wealth of resources for everyone. The thing that makes any Human Resources department successful is authenticity. We promote that here at McLane as the ‘A’ in LEAD states. This has been an awesome aspect to witness and experience.”

Aosen Jamir, Special Operations Analyst Intern, Baylor University
Degree: MBA/MSIS
“The most valuable learning experience during my internship so far has been understanding the importance of constant learning and improvement. While my focus during school was on deepening my technical skills, at McLane I am learning the significance of big picture thinking. A broad breadth of knowledge is crucial for making meaningful contributions to the organization. It requires a mindset of continuous learning to educate oneself at every opportunity about how the organization operates and how its business functions.”

Kaylee Nicosia, Operations Intern, Baylor University
Degree: Computer Science
“I chose McLane’s internship program because of the uniquely welcoming environment. As I have transitioned from my military career, it was crucial for me to find an internship that would make me feel like part of the team, and McLane has done just that. From the start, I have felt like I belong, and this internship already feels like home. I am grateful for the opportunity to work in Operations and have thoroughly enjoyed my time here. I couldn’t imagine being an intern at any other company.”

Matthew Shrand, Sales Intern, University of Houston
Degree: Arts in Advertising
“Having the opportunity to travel all over the country visiting a new account, new team, and a new area that I’ve never visited before in my life has been something that has been more educational and beneficial than anything I’ve learned inside a classroom. While I’ve always considered myself a social, outgoing individual these past weeks have really shown me that being able to provide people with the ability to create everlasting memories, which usually always center around food, is my passion in life. Being able to be the one who assists in selling the products to stores knowing we’re helping them run their store to help the lives of countless other people has been extremely rewarding. This opportunity has also given me immense confidence with independence in life and really showing myself all that is out there in the world, rather than just staying in the place I grew up all my life.”

Sydney Sell, Safety Intern, Texas A&M University
Degree Program: Allied Health
“My department contributes to the overall goals of McLane because they continuously work to improve the lives of all the McLane teammates. All throughout the distribution centers there are signs that read ‘Work Safe, Home Safe. The safety team here at McLane works hard to ensure that the company follows this saying by protecting all employees from work hazards.”

We want to thank all McLane interns for enriching our company with their insight and for allowing us the opportunity to learn from them.
